Honored to be creating a new work for the legendary violinist and teacher Almita Vamos, inspired by Giuseppe Tartini’s famous “Devil’s Trill” Sonata. My approach preserves Tartini’s original violin part while completely reimagining its surroundings to reflect the story of the piece’s origin; a dream in which Tartini heard the devil play music of extraordinary beauty that he could never fully recreate upon waking. In this new setting, themes from across the sonata are woven together in unexpected ways, unfolding out of order as they might within a dream. The goal is to capture the breathless sense of wonder and distortion of time that defines dreaming itself, exploring what Tartini may have glimpsed in that imagined encounter.
